During the 12 labors of Hercules, in which he sought to earn his
redemption after killing his wife and children, the Cancerian crab does
play a minor role. Driven mad by Hera, Queen of the Gods and
Hercules' stepmother, Hercules kills blood kin later incurring blood
guilt. The God Apollo tells him in order to be purified he must
become a slave and serve his cousin, King Eurystheus of Mycenae, who in
return sends him on 12 tasks. One of the task he is sent on is to
slay the Hydra., a multi-headed snake monster. The crab was sent
by Hera to distract Hercules during the battle. It bit him
on the foot and was then stomped to death by Hercules. The
Goddess Hera later rewarded the crab for its efforts by placing its
image in the night sky.
