Academic:

Linguist List -- International list that addresses linguistic topics from Dissertation publication, Calls for Papers, Job Openings, Questions (from linguists), Summaries of off-list discussions (from the prior), Conferences, Book Reviews, Software releases, etc. High Volume. Digest Available.

Nabokov-L -- The Vladimir Nabokov Forum, provides calls for papers, conference announcements, some discussion, as well as Nabokov-in-the-media updates. Low Volume.

OED-L -- Newsletter of the Oxford English Dictionary Online. Primarily concerned with the articles by editors, researchers, and contributors on their work for the OED, as well as regular updates on the overall progress of the revision programme, and reports on other items, both interesting and entertaining, that the editors come across in the course of their research. Each issue also contains an Appeals List, consisting of words and phrases for which entries are currently being drafted or revised, and for which further evidence is needed. Monthly.

Classics-L -- Classicists' listserv dedicated to discussion of topics of classical interest -- greek, latin, egyptian, archaeology, etc. Lots of interesting discussion and open-ended questions, along with some conference postings, cross-postings, "classics in the news" etc. High-volume, digest available. Bryn Mawr Classical Review -- timely reviews of current scholarly work in the field of classical studies (including archaeology). Monographs only, all peer reviewed. Medium volume.

Anahita --  a scholarly list for the discussion of women and gender in the ancient Mediterranean world. Discussion topics include: women's work, legal status, social roles -- both public and private, intellectual life, religious activities, and men's views on women.


Political:

MarxMail -- The Marxism list is a worldwide moderated forum for activists and scholars in the Marxist tradition who favor a non-sectarian and non-dogmatic approach. It puts a premium on independent thought and rigorous but civil debate [self-description]. Called by others as "a bunch of marxists ranting and raving." Lots of discussion, some cross-posting, public archives. High Volume. Digest available.

Hunter/CUNY:

Hunter-l-- listserv of topics of interest to the Hunter College community; public-access archives. Some real discussion, lots of posts about Hunter-relevant issues. Medium volume.

Senate Forum -- CUNY-wide listserv for topics of interest to the CUNY community. Lots of tangental political ranting and flaming. Still, a good source for CUNY info unavailable eslewhere without taking time to do the searching (BoT agendas, minutes, etc.; city budgets, rallies, etc.). High volume.


Fun & Games

O-Net -- Orienteering Mail Group, maintained on Yahoo!Groups. An open forum about Orienteering. Topics will include events, equipment, mapping, planning, controlling, symbols.

Classical Guitar List -- This is the former Segovia-L list. Past discussions have included CG music, performers, interpretation, CG events, finger nails, guitar repair & building, CG travel, CG instrument sources, and more.
