So.... you want a surface piercing?

Surface piercings generally reject due to the fact that they are not performed properly.  They are often done in a rush or incorrectly. Surface piercings have become popular since tattoo magazines and piercing websites have become desperate for attention. In the recent months, they have published "freaky" photos and dubbed them as "artists of the month." In this website I will share with you, my interest in extreme and unusual body piercings.

What is a surface piercing?

A surface piercing is a piercing where the entrance and exit holes are pierced through a flat area of skin. A piercing on the back of your neck, more professionally known as the nape piercing is the most common surface piercing. The nape was my first surface piercing to be performed. I think it looks beautiful, yet many do not share my opinion. I remember changing in gym class and becoming a side show for many of my classmates. Many people are extremely honest about their opinions and do not feel at all weird about telling me how gross they think it is.

Why do surface piercings reject?
Your body would rather not have piercings. It acknowledges them as foreign matter attempting to penetrate its defenses. Taking this into account, you need to understand not just how your body heals piercings, but how it rejects them as well.

Most of the time when small objects are placed under the skin, your body pushes them out like a splinter. To simplify, this happens by "selective suicide."  The skin above the object dies and falls out. In the case of a piercing, this happens from the outside edges in. You can see this process take place in the animation above and as I've marked with red in the diagrams. This happens almost automatically.

It is important to note that a piercing always sits on this balance that it never leaves. If you bump a well healed piercing even years after having it done, can cause enough damage to tip the scales. This will create the rejection process. I know from personal experience that earrings I've had since I was a little kid can act up when provoked. Just keep the area clean and as protected for the first few weeks. Piercings can be a great aesthetic addition to ones body, but when done improperly, nasty scars will be left for life.
