Welcome! You are probably wondering what does our mission mean or what exactly does the Community Health Ed. Club do at Hunter College. Well, basically we care about health and not just our own health but the health of our loved ones and the community (Hunter or the public at large). And we are not the types of people who just care for the sake of caring, but we actually do something about it. We like actions. We don't tell people "hey, keep yourself healthy" but we actually tell/show them how to be healthy. We take the possible barriers into consideration, as well, that keep people from practicing healthier behaviors ---- e.g. maybe because they just don't know the facts or maybe they don't have any health insurance ---- but whatever the reasons might be WE try to help people overcome their barriers. Sometimes, in doing this, though, we have to get "down-and-dirty" like in cases where we try to change policies that just do more harm than good and favor only certain groups. Anyway, we haven't actually experienced the "down-and-dirty" stuff, yet, because we're only a new club. If any of you have any health issues or health-related issues that you want people to pay attention to or have a target population you have in mind that you want to educate something about, etc., then just let our officers know. They will be more than willing to help you with your cause and even fund you. Send them an e-mail at comheclub@collegeclub.com. By the way, for those of you who might be interested in joining us, we're located at the Brookdale Campus, 425 E. 25th Street, New York, NY 10010. We currently don't have an office yet, but the Urban Public Health/Community Health Ed. Dept. where we belong is at the 10th Fl West Blg of the Brookdale Campus. And you could always send us an e-mail. Right now, you're probably thinking, "Wow, this is a serious club." Guess what? We try to have fun too and we also try to do things for ourselves that help us advance professionally. Last semester we invited guess speakers and some of us attended conferences, symposiums, forums, etc. This semester, we will do field trips/site visits, invite somebody to do workshops on resume/interview skills and more. We're trying to make these activities standard activities for the club --- to be available every semester. To see schedule of club events, go to our Official COMHE CLUB (this is what we call our club for short) Calendar at www.dailydrill.com --- you have to select our club as your group connection (you'll know what I mean once you log in, if not send me an e-mail). We are glad that you have chosen to be part of the Community Health Ed. Club of Hunter College. Your college experience with us will be a very rewarding one. Never feel like your idea(s) don't count when it comes to improving the club. Voice your opinion. |
