                                            This week will be dedicated to Alexander Technique.


 
 
 

 Developed during the late 1900's by Australian actor F.Mathias Alexander,


 
 

this innovative technique, grew out of the realization that his voice loss was merely an effect of his acting posture. A slight inclination of his neck as he was on the scene was enough to affect his voice proyection and capacity as an actor. This realization led Alexander to study the body and its anatomy; to understand the not so mysterious ways in which our bodily habits -the ways we sit, stand and walk- affect us, causing or helping develop not only light back pains or loss of voice but more severe muscle-joint and bone conditions.


 
 

    The Australian actor explored the ways in which body and movement awareness, could help us take better care of our bodies, develop better quality movement and be our own body therapists. One of the most surprising effects of this technique was its impact on severe conditions such as arthritis and severe back pain. Alexander Technique became a form of therapeutic medical approach to our body. Today it has reached not only the artistic realm -dancers and actors- but that of doctors,  nurses, and people who want or need to take care of their bodies. They seem to agree that body awareness -allowing our bodies to" re-member" themselves, developing their own memory-, is an effective yet simple way to confront our material limitations and create possibilities of growth.
