ARE YOU AT RISK for Colorectal Cancer?

Everyone age 50 or over, male and female equally, is at average risk for contracting colorectal cancer (CRC.) But the following factors increase your risk:

Having a personal history of precancerous polyps
Having a family history of CRC or polyps – one or more parents, brothers, sisters or children
Having a family history of multiple cancers, such as breast, ovarian, uterine or other organ cancers
Having a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Eating a diet low in fiber and high in fat

Leading a sedentary lifestyle

PREVENTION

Screening and removal of polyps remains the best way to prevent colorectal cancer, although there is no guarantee that you will be able to avoid it completely. There are some lifestyle choices you can make, however, that may reduce your risk:

Eat a diet rich in fiber – whole grains, fruits, and vegetables
Eat foods that are low in saturated fat
Exercise regularly
Avoid smoking
Avoid drinking excessive amounts of alchohol
