After
more than a decade
the Capoeira Club is alive and strong at Hunter. It is open
to all Hunter students and alumni. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian
Martial Art, developed by the African slaves of colonial Brazil
as a method of self-defense against their owners. It is a unique
mixture of fight, dance, and game, in which two players mix
kicks, floor movements and acrobatics to confuse their opponent
and leave him open to unexpected attacks. It is played to the
accompaniment of traditional music and and singing, which creates
rhythm and atmosphere for different styles of play. The game,
music, and singing create an atmosphere in which all the players
become one.
The
art involves conditioning your body's strength, flexibility,
& endurance. Regardelss of age, sex or body type, anyone
and everyone has the ability to learn this art form. All that
is required of you is to be patient with yourself, test your
limits, overcome them, and come to class with an open mind for
this great experience!!
The
Capoeira Club sponsors free classes at hunter. Our
classes are introductory in nature, focusing on the basics.
Whatever your level of experience with capoeira, you are welcome
to join. Our classes, which are taught by instructors from Abadá
Capoeira New York City, are held every Wednesday from 1:00pm
to 3:00pm on the 6th floor of the Thomas Hunter Building during
the fall and spring semesters. The only requirement is that
you wear sweats and a white shirt.
