The Latino Honor Society of Hunter College Constitution

Article I: Statement of Purpose
The Latino Honor Society has been formed at Hunter College in an attempt to honor Hunter’s outstanding students of Latino background. The Latino Honor Society provides a forum for students with similar backgrounds to work together in the attainment of academic excellence and recognition, as well as scholastic and cultural enrichment in the form of organized activities and programs focusing on Latino student needs. It is the goal of the Latino Honor Society to channel the special skills and talents of each member in a way that is productive for the students themselves, for other college students and faculty, and for the wider community.
Article II: Membership Requirements
Students of Latino Background with 30 earned credits and striving to attain a 3.0 G.P.A., with a minimum of 2.7 G.P.A., are encouraged to participate in all LHS activities and meetings. The Latino Honor Society encourages official membership application of any students of Latino background willing to actively participate in club activities, who has completed at least 60 credits at Hunter College, and who has a G.P.A of 3.0 or higher.
Article III: Induction Requirements
Formal induction into the Latino Honor Society is contingent upon the following: 1. A G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher. 2. Continued active participation for a minimum of two semesters in club functions which must include being part of the organizing committee of two activities per semester, and 3. Completion of at least 60 credits. *It will be left to the discretion of LHS Advisors and officers whether to initiate a member who has the G.P.A. and participation requirements but does not meet the credit requirement (no less than 50 credits.)
Article IV: Application Process
Candidates must submit to the President of Latino Honor Society a completed application, autobiographical statement and a current transcript. These documents should be submitted to the President at the LHS office located at Hunter’s East building Room 1439. The President, Vice President and faculty advisors will confer to decide on the acceptance or denial of the application. Upon arriving at a decision, it is the responsibility of the President to notify the applicant of said decision. Applicants will be informed of the final decision via phone or mail.
Article V: Officers
The Latino Honor Society will consist of the following offices: (1) President: The President will be expected to maintain a leadership position, preside over meetings, coordinate club activities and closely interact with other officer and committee members. (2) Vice President: The Vice President will work closely with the President in the coordination of activities and will preside over meetings in the absence of the President. (3) Treasurer: The Treasurer will be responsible for the Society’s budget and keeping a record of all collections and expenses. The Treasurer will work closely with the President to ensure that proper club management rules and regulations (as established by the college) are followed. (4) Secretary: The Secretary will be responsible for recording the minutes at meetings and making them available to all members via e-mail or by posting them at the LHS office. All officers will be expected to work in conjunction with the Faculty Advisors, Isabel Pinedo and José deJesús, as well as represent the Society to other faculty members and organizations in order to promote and advance the goals and activities of the Latino Honor Society. * Only the President and Treasurer may have signature power as stated by the college club rules and regulations.
Article V: Election Procedures
Elections will be held at the end of each semester for all vacant offices. All nominees must have a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher, as well as consistent participation at meetings and in club activities. Elections will be held by secret ballot.
Article VII: Committees
All clubs activities and programs will be organized through various committees, which will be selected as the need arises. As the Latino Honor Society stresses unity and interaction among its members, everyone will have the opportunity of being on different committees throughout the year.
Article VIII: Meetings
Meetings will be held every other week of the month and the day and time will be arranged according to schedule availability. The schedule chosen should be the one where all officers and most members will be able to attend.
