Notes from Meetings

Hello, Everyone! This is where most of the "news/happenings" will be posted in case some of you missed one of our events. It will be redone soon enough, but for the sake of time, this is what we will use for now.

November 17, 2009 Update:
-VITA Information/Recruitment will be on Saturday, November 21, 2009. The Society is well aware that it is on a Saturday, but Hunter College’s Classrooms are pretty much booked for the semester, leaving us little to no choice for this date. In this meeting, we will be discussing the seriousness and commitment needed and expected of all the volunteers. The link for the VITA exam is on the VITA-Volunteers Tab, where you’ll be completing BOTH the BASIC and INTERMEDIATE levels. We will be releasing the IRS VITA Books during the meeting, and we HIGHLY ADVICE that you come get them, as they will be tremendously helpful in preparing for you for the exam and tax season. We understand that many of you can’t make it on that day, so we’ll be ready to hand them out on the weekdays during our Office Hours as well. However, as for the material and discussions we’ve discussed during the meeting, not everything will be covered and written down for a Note Update. REMEMBER: You only have 2X to take this exam: Don’t rush it. Please come to us and ask for help, or study in a group.
-The President is discussing about planning a Resume Workshop with the Representative from PWC. The date is TBA, but it should be about a week before the Finals Week. This is a good opportunity for many of you to meet with their representatives. Perhaps they may have a recruiter among them as well.
-Career’s updates: Please check our Career’s page.
-VITA updates: Please check our VITA Volunteers page.
-THANKS GIVING COMING SOON! What are your plans? We’re planning about having a Winter Mixer. Maybe we’ll chat about VITA (In case you need help).

Words from the Secretary:

"When recruitment starts, I, Alex (Shi Qi) Shen, will be in charge of ALL your contact information. When you email us that you’re interested, PLEASE WRITE DOWN YOUR FULL NAME AND EMAIL, or I will NOT add you to the system (that also goes for volunteers who plan to walk into the office to sign up). Also, please note that you will often be emailed during the winter for training, so expect to check it at least 2X a week. If you do not want streams of the latest information sent to your email, your only source will be to check the website for events and updates (the slower way)."

November 12, 2009 Update:
-Unfortunately, this year the Career Expo at Hunter College did not bring as many Accounting firms as we wanted, but one should always think outside the box: Look everywhere that might need your Accounting/Finance/Tax skills. Other small companies or facilities could be offering those positions. Keep an open mind.
-A promising and well respected internship from Sirius XM Radio. Please check the Career’s Tab for more information!

Words from Information Technology:

"I can vouch for this. I was accepted as a Finance Intern for SiriusXM Radio (one of the top 10 for VAULT) over the Summer of 2009. I’ve learned so much during that time frame and had fun while at that too! Facilities are great. You’re in a very high class area of the city so it gives you a sense of “this is where I’ll be someday” sort of feeling. The work I’ve done for the company is gives me a feeling I can never get in class—Enthusiasm. "

November 4, 2009 Update:
-Career Opportunity Panel: This event is held annually and invites esteemed professionals in their respective field of Accounting to speak about the work they do, how they got there, how they started, as well as give advise and tips to Accounting students on how to succeed at the field. This year's theme of the Career Opportunity Panel discusses the benefits of working in a Public VS Private Sector in Accounting. Bottom line: SIMPLY AMAZING. It was wonderful to see so many Accounting students to hear our speakers from Eisner, Ernst and Young, Price Waterhouse Coopers, and Avenue Capital.
-We hope that everyone learned something about their career paths for the future and was able to network with the speakers. Great questions everyone! Hopefully next year they’ll come back again with recruitment perhaps?
-VITA updates: Please check our VITA Volunteers page.
